What is a credit?
A credit is a unit that represents a completed course. Most full-year classes are worth 1.0 credit; a single semester is usually worth 0.5. Most high schools require somewhere around 22 to 26 total credits to graduate, though the exact number varies by school and state.
Graduation isn’t a mystery—it’s a checklist. Once you know exactly which boxes need to be checked, you can actually plan for it instead of just hoping it works out.
What is GPA?
GPA, or Grade Point Average, turns your letter grades into a single number, usually on a 4.0 scale. It’s meant to give a quick snapshot of overall performance.
To calculate GPA: add up the grade points for every class, then divide by the number of classes. Some schools also offer weighted GPA, which gives extra points for harder classes like Honors or AP.
Why freshman year counts from day one
Every semester of high school becomes part of a permanent academic record. Freshman year grades count toward the cumulative GPA just as much as senior year grades do—there’s no “warm-up” year that doesn’t count.
Where to actually check this stuff
Most schools have an online portal where students can see current grades, credits earned and progress toward graduation requirements. Knowing how to log in and read that report is one of the most useful skills freshman year can teach.

How can Route 21 help?
Did the mentee leave understanding credits and GPA as a concrete system, not an abstract mystery? Do they know how to check their own progress and who to ask if something looks off?
